Research areas range across seismic, acoustic, and electromagnetic propagation, terrestrial and cryospheric sciences, force projection and sustainment, biogeochemical sciences, geospatial information systems, and water resources.

CRREL CHRONOLOGY
1944 – Frost Effects Laboratory is established in Boston, Massachusetts.

1945 – The Permafrost Division of the St. Paul (Minnesota) District, Corps of Engineers, established.

1949 – The Snow, Ice and Permafrost Research Establishment (SIPRE) is
established.

1953 – Arctic Construction and Frost Effects Laboratory (ACFEL) is established in Boston by combining Frost Effects Laboratory and Permafrost Division of the St. Paul District.

1961 – Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) is established (on 1 Feb 1961) in Hanover, New Hampshire, by combining SIPRE and ACFEL.
